Meet Mehrzad Hemati, the newest member of the Fame and Partners design team. She came on board just as we began designing our just-launched evening collection, and ended up infusing every piece with her signature flare and design expertise. Read on to find out what inspired the collection, how she became a designer, and the dresses she can’t wait to wear.
FAME: What was the inspiration behind the evening collection?
Mehrzad: The evening collection was inspired by a moment of old-school glamour in the current day. The modern woman wanting that touch of opulence in a chic and modern way. Combining pretty sorbet pastels with precious stone hues, elements of sheer tulle and light georgette contrasted with glossy silk charmeuse – everything about easy-to-wear elegance, and an overarching focus on accentuating the female form through panelling, draping and gathering.
FAME: What is your design process like?
Mehrzad: Design process starts with research, gathering inspiration, information and creating a mood board that captures the feeling of the collection. Once I have a solid concept, I start to design the pieces, which is a combination of hand sketches, CADs (Computer Aid sketches), fabric manipulations and draping. Choosing material begins in the research phase, but evolves while designing the pieces. Once a cohesive collection is born, we start the development; Creating Tech packs, making samples, and refining each piece to perfection.
FAME: How did you become a designer? Tell us your story!
Mehrzad: I have always been interested in product design. I got my bachelors degree in Industrial/ Product design and soon realized that I am very passionate about designing clothes. I decided to pursue my dream and received my masters degree in Fashion Design from one of the best universities in the United States, Academy of Art University.
FAME: What are your top three favorite pieces in the collection and why?
Mehrzad: First, the Elektra Two Piece. It’s a redesigned version of our best seller, Escala, but it’s a two-piece set. You can wear the pieces together or separately, and easily dress up or down. Next, the Ellie Dress, because it’s is simple and chic–an elegant, feminine dress for any occasion. Finally, the Miranda Dress. This ballerina-inspired dress is made out of sheer layers of tulle which gives it a very feminine and soft look.
