Layering: It’s a concept that’s so familiar to us that it seems like it should be easy, but the truth is, it’s not. Combinations you thought would work in your head end up looking ridiculous in real life, and it can feel like you never have the perfect piece to complete the outfit. So we came up with 4 simple rules to make fall layering foolproof.
1. Stock up on neutral layering basics
A black turtleneck is a versatile wardrobe staple that layers well under almost anything. Adding more black accessories, like a belt or stockings, will make a layered look feel deliberate, not thrown-together.
2. Think outside of the box
You’ve likely tried layering a t-shirt under a tank, but have you thought about wearing a skirt over a dress or playsuit? Tuck your favorite shift dress or romper into a midi skirt, and voila! You’ve got an entirely new look.
3. Mix textures
Add intrigue to your layered look by mixing textures. We love how this soft knit sweater balances out a shiny metallic dress.
4. Add some vintage
Here’s a tip from our on-set stylist: Mix vintage in with ultra-modern pieces for an unexpectedly cool outfit. We never would’ve guessed that this vintage blouse would work with a gold, ruffled jumpsuit–but somehow, it just does.
